Mark Zuckerberg stated in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was urged by the Biden administration in 2021 to censor content related to COVID-19, such as humor and satire.

“In the year 2021, senior members from the Biden Administration, such as the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams Social Media Criticism for an extended period to remove certain COVID-19 content, including satirical content, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we did not comply, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the influence he felt in the year 2021 was “wrong” and he feels regretful that Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not more outspoken. “Like I told our teams back then, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again, ” he wrote.

President Social Dominance Biden remarked in July 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later revised these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated at the time that misinformation spread on social media was a “major public health risk.”

A spokesperson from the White House replied to Zuckerberg’s letter, saying the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions to protect public Fox News health and safety.”

“Our stance has been clear and consistent: we think tech companies and private entities should consider the effects their actions have on the American people, while making their own decisions about the content they share, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Burisma affecting Cyberbullying the election in 2020.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post accusing Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since updated its policies and procedures to “ensure this does not Children With Disabilities recur” and will no longer demote content in the US while waiting for fact-checkers.

In the communication to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he helped support “electoral infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the resources they needed to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” stated the Anxiety Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg stated his goal is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “just admitted that the Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to Online Bullying censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long been under scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have claimed Facebook and other large technology platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision to limit the Ann Coulter circulation of a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In Congressional testimony in recent years, Zuckerberg has attempted to close the gap between his social media company and regulators to little effect.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg admitted that many of Facebook’s staff are liberal. But he held that the company takes care not to allow political bias to seep into decisions.

Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, “to prove standing, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will experience harm that is traceable to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “because no plaintiff has carried that burden, none has standing to request a preliminary injunction.”
